Music can transform, music can shape, music can inspire. From ‘Auld Lang Syne’ to ‘Happy Birthday’ or any number of rock, country, blues, pop or spiritual songs, music inspires a reaction. The listener associates music with a key time and place…taking them to a memory when that song was playing. New music, at its best, can make us see in our mind’s eye a time and a place…we literally can be taken there in our minds by music.
We identify with songs because they express what we are thinking and feeling. Songs of joy, pain, disappointment, love and broken hearts join us to the artist in their emotion. Of course many songs are just plain fun and remind of good times, with good friends and family!
Depending on the song and the artist, I often find myself whisked away to a time and place. When I hear any of the songs from the original Boston album, I see the flaming guitars on the cover, and the disk spinning on the turntable in my teenage room in an old farm house where I grew up.
I am Greg Deason and I love music of many kinds. While I tend to lean into rock, blues, roots and spiritual music…any music, done well, inspires me. I’m not in the running to see my name in lights at a major venue...I’m not on a path to be a headliner at an arena...I've just enjoyed a lifelong love affair with music.
I bought my first guitar, a Sigma (made by Martin) in 1978. It played well then and still has a solid, but aging voice and body…sort of like me! I’ve added many guitars since the OG, but the guitar above 'Odele' is my favorite. Odele is aging gracefully. When we first met, she was pristine, but as we’ve made a lot of music together, she’s showing some scars. As the old saying goes ‘scars have a way of reminding us that the past was real’ and she and I have made a lot of music in the last 15 years…bringing her and the music to life.
I was fortunate to take a poetry class in the midst of pursuing a degree in Agricultural Economics. Music is often poetry…poetry is often music. That classic study of poetry has impacted how I write and how I hear music. I love to hear music both written and performed by an artist, because we know exactly what they had in mind for the music before all tweaks made by others. I’ve written several songs and I am always hopeful that they can help the listener feel what I felt on the day they came to life.
Let’s make some musical memories.
My hope with Kindred Spirit Project is to help bring people together and to make memories. In most cases that means people are gathered for dinner and drinks or a party and the music is just there to enhance the evening….mood music! To that end, I have been a collector of old and new songs…and playing them in my own way. I don’t try to make a cover song be an exact replication of the original but find a way to pay homage to that original in my own voice and my own style. With my originals, I simply hope you’ll enjoy the stories and the images I have been inspired to create and share.
If you’d like to enhance the atmosphere of your bar or restaurant, make a backyard gathering better, or create a spiritual event, let’s talk. I’d enjoy working with you on a custom set list and even learn new music to make your evening special.
